‘The Crazies’ offers thought-provoking terror

George Romero remake is clever, fiendish fun

The Crazies’ is a remake of a 1973 film by horror maestro George Romero, best known for his zombie epic “Night of the Living Dead” and its sequels.
   One by one, the residents of a small Iowa town are going crazy.   As ordinary people turn into mindless killers, the town sheriff (Timothy Olyphant, HBO’s “Deadwood”) and his wife, the town doctor (Radha Mitchell) uncover the cause of the mayhem — a mysterious virus — and find themselves fleeing not only the titular “crazies,” but a military force determined to quarantine the town .
