Fourth movie in production —
Johnny Depp (left) is expected to reprise his role as Capt. Jack Sparrow in the fourth ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie, tentatively slated for a summer 2011 release.
Characters Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and Captain Barbossa will make anchor in the Newberg Public Library’s showing of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy later this month.
The movie marathon, selected with the theme “Make Waves at the Library” in mind, takes place from noon to 8 p.m. July 29 in the library’s annex. It will include pizza donated by Papa Murphy’s Pizza, drinks, games and free pirate paraphernalia, including eye patches and possibly bandannas. Also, movie go-ers can design and apply their own Henna tattoos.
K’Lyn Hann, technical services and young adult librarian, said the library strives to gain community involvement within the library by putting on events and activities for differen
t age groups. This includes the marathon and Henna tattoo activity.
“It has been a dozen years or so since we had a traditional Henna artist in the library,” she said. “Now, I bought the supplies and done the research so hopefully the kids can make their own, or make tattoos for each other.”
“The library typically does programs for any age group to, in a roundabout fashion, encourage literacy-building and community participation.”
This specific event and its activities are free and offered for middle and high school youth.
“We do more programming in the summer because the kids are out of school,” she said. “It gives them a little more flexibility and (fills) free time.”
Hann said she anticipates between 18 to 24 participants, although some may come and go throughout the event depending on who can get rides and whose schedules work with the event.
The first of the trilogy, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” tells the story of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp)’s quest to regain control of the notorious and highly feared ship, the Black Pearl. Along with that, Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) — the current captain of the Pearl — and his crew set sail for Port Royal in search of the last piece of Aztec gold that the governor’s daughter, Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), took from William Turner (Orlando Bloom) in their youth.
After Captain Barbossa’s crew captures Swann, Sparrow and Turner set out on an adventure to recapture the girl and the ship that took her. The movie is filled with action, surprise, romance and comedy.
“The Curse of the Black Pearl” also incorporates scenes from the popular Disney theme park ride, Pirates of the Caribbean. The movie was directed by Gore Verbinski in 2003 and is rated PG-13 for action/adventure violence. It runs for 143 minutes and is a product of Walt Disney Pictures.
The second installment, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” includes the same lineup of characters, including Bill Nighy as Davy Jones and Tom Hollander as Cutler Beckett. In this movie, Sparrow, along with Culter Beckett and Jones’ sea-bound crew, race to uncover and gain control of the Jones’ heart. The movie includes twists and turns, including an unpaid debt Sparrow owes Jones, Turner and Swann’s sentence to hang and an appearance by Turner’s father, “Bootstrap Bill.”
“Dead Man’s Chest” runs for 151 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of adventure violence including frightening images. It is a product of Walt Disney Pictures.
The third movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” involves the same cast as the prior two. In this movie, Sparrow must be rescued from the “World’s End” after Swann tricks him into staying on the ship as Jones’ creature, the Kraken, bites the ship to pieces. The crew rescues Sparrow and with Beckett in control of the oceans, the nine pirate lords gather to fight for what they believe is rightfully theirs.
This movie is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action/adventure violence and some frightening images. It is a product of Walt Disney Pictures and runs for 169 minutes.
All movies will be shown consecutively on July 29. For more information, call the Newberg Public Library at 503-554-7732 or visit www.newbergoregon.gov/library/event/teen-movie-marathon.
The fourth installment to the movies, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is set to release summer 2011.
