Twelve of the 14-member NHS cheer team will take the floor Feb. 13 in the state finals.
PORTLAND — Newberg High School’s varsity cheerleading squad will compete Feb. 13 in the state finals with 12 of the 14-member squad taking the floor at the Memorial Coliseum.
Until last year, the squad had not been competitive in the 6A division, with their 2009 third-place finish the first state placing for Newberg cheerleading in many years.
Lisa Berg, now in her fourth year as varsity cheer head coach (under the direction of cheer adviser Carolyn DeCrevel), said she expects another strong showing from the team.
“They are an extremely talented group,” she said. “When they take the mat at state I will be so excited and just can’t wait to see them perform.”
Prior to competing in state, the team took first-place at regional meets in McMinnville and Lake Oswego, as well as second-place in a meet at Lakeridge High School. Their final contest of the season will be held today (Saturday) in Salem; results were unavailable as of press time.
“Our team has worked many days and hours and I am so proud to be a part of it,” said team captain Bretteny Green, a senior. “I can’t wait until we enter the Coliseum together to perform.”
The cheer program raised funds to help offset the cost of competing at state this year with a can drive, car washes, a high school dance and other activities. The squad supports many athletic programs at the high school, including volleyball, soccer, wrestling, water polo, football and basketball.
