Mackey W. Hill
   Mackey W. Hill of Newberg died Sept. 17, 2009. He was 100.
   He was born May 31, 1909, in Crowell, Texas, to William and Martha (Nichols) Hill and graduated from high school in 1927 in Hamlin, Texas.
   He moved with his family to California, where he attended the Training School for Christian Workers and Los Angeles Pacific College. He married Bertha Mann. He graduated from the University of California-Los Angeles and earned a master’s degree from College of the Pacific.
  He served as pastor to several Free Methodist Church congregations in California for the next decade. He was recruited in 1949 to teach history and political science at Pacific College (now George Fox University), from which he retired as professor emeritus in 1974.
   He also pastored at Free Methodist churches in Carlton, Woodburn and Newberg. He graduated from Western Evangelical Seminary after his retirement.
   Survivors include: wife Rosa of Newberg; sons Reginald of Nampa, Idaho, and Thomas of Long Beach, Calif.; daughters Marilyn Pruitt of Tigard, Patricia Craven of Toledo, Sara Grant of Newberg and Sylvia Boyd of Newport; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.
   A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Northside Community Church in Newberg.

Dorothy M. Garrick
   Dorothy Marie Garrick, who has family in Newberg, died of breast cancer Sept. 4, 2009, in Eugene. She was 85.
   She was born Jan. 13, 1924, to Orin and Maude (Kilbourne) Gates in Scott City, Kan. She moved with her family to a homestead near Colville, Wash., around 1930.
   Around 1936 the family moved to Dayton, where she attended high school and worked in the hop and berry fields. She later worked at the sheriff’s office and at the Oregon Hotel in McMinnville.
   She married Jim Garrick on Jan. 13, 1946. They made their home in Portland, where she worked for Built Well Furniture, Alemite and Montgomery Ward’s.
   She enjoyed visiting family, camping trips, bowling, gardening, sewing, crocheting, baking pies, traveling, garage sales and antique collecting.
   Survivors include: son Richard of Portland; daughters Patricia Garrick-Viltz and Alice Dodson, both of Eugene; brother Russell Gates of Auburn, Wash.; sister June Moore of Newberg and five grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 2000.
   Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
   A funeral service was Sept. 19 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A concluding service followed at Valley View Memorial Park Cemetery.

Donald A. Hall
   Donald A. Hall of Dundee died Aug. 19, 2009. He was 79.
   He was born July 30, 1930, in Los Angeles to Howard and May Hall. He graduated in 1948 from Milwaukie High School.
   He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force that year and served two tours in Japan and Korea. Returning to Oregon, he entered Cascade Seminary, graduating in 1956.
   He married fellow seminarian Alice Fields in 1955. During the next decade he pastored several churches and also taught school. In 1966 he was posted to Vancouver, Wash., where he ministered and taught until 1983, when the couple moved to Portland.
   In 1989, the couple moved to Newberg to be close to family. He worked as an educational assistant at Central Elementary School in Newberg for five years and was on the pastoral team of Promise Church of Dundee.
   He enjoyed church life, family, friends, leading a neighborhood Bible study, his dogs, debating theology, writing, travel, reading mysteries, crocheting, and time with family.
   Survivors include: daughters, Lana Hall of Santa Ana, Calif., and Linda Cox of Reno, Nev.; sons, Gordon Hall of Newberg, Jonathan Hall of Eagleville, Penn., and Phil Hall of Hammond; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his wife Alice.
   A memorial service was held Sept. 3 at Promise Church with Pastor Rick Dutton officiating. Interment was at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver, Wash.
   Memorial donations may be made to Promise Church, 23330 N.E. Fulquartz Landing Road, Dundee OR 97115, or the local animal shelter.

Jeanne R. Perry
   Jeanne Rothrock Perry of Newberg died Sept. 17, 2009. She was 87.
   She was born July 21, 1922, in Aurora, Ill., to Nelson and Elsa (Chandler) Rothrock. She attended high school there.
   She moved with her family to Newberg in 1939 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
   She married Lee Perry in 1949 and they made their home in Newberg. She worked at Portland General Electric and at Willamette Valley Medical Center, among other jobs.
   Survivors include: husband Lee of Newberg; sisters, Virginia Twenge of Newberg and Bette Roberts of Port Angeles, Wash.
   She was preceded in death by a brother, J.R. Rothrock.
   A private burial service will be held.

Edward A. Otter
   Edward A. Otter of Newberg died Sept. 1, 2009. He was 73.
   He was born Sept. 7, 1935, in Lewiston, Idaho, to James and Ruth Otter. He graduated from high school in 1953 in Arcata, Calif.
   He served in the U.S. Army. He majored in business at Lewis and Clark College. He married Paula Scott on Sept. 1, 1956, in Silverton.
   He was a member of the Newberg First Presbyterian Church and served on numerous church committees, as well as singing in the choir. He enjoyed travel and golf.
   Survivors include: son Michael of McMinnville; daughter Diane Bell of Lake Oswego; brother Larry of Saratoga, Calif.; four grandchildren and two nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his wife, Paula.
   A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Newberg First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Peter Blank officiating.
   Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
