    August Martell
    August Martell of Newberg died Oct. 26, 2009. He was 87.
    He was born Nov. 25, 1921 in Elgin, N.D., to Jacob and Christina (Guthmiller) Martell and attended school there, taking over the family farm upon the death of his father.
    He moved to Newberg in 1941, and on June 14, 1942, he married Eleanora Stevhan in Vancouver, Wash. 
    He served in the military from 1942 to 1945, in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to Newberg and worked for a dairy in St. Paul. In 1949 he went to work for the State Highway Department. He retired in 1984. 
    August lived in the house he built on Villa Road for the past 56 years, and was half-owner, with his son, of Doug’s Auto Parts in Tigard. He enjoyed farming, tractors, cars, and carpentry and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
    Survivors include: sons Douglas and Allan, both of Newberg; daughter Linda Rickert of Dundee; sister Elinor Hoks of Wisconsin; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by wife Eleanora on April 17, 2008.
    His funeral service was held Oct. 30 in Zion Lutheran Church, with Pastor Steve Estrem officiating.     Committal took place at Newberg Friends Cemetery.
