Newberg's defense not only stopped Forest Grove's offense cold Friday evening, it scored twice during the 41-0 victory and was responsible for numerous Viking turnovers.
The Tigers dominated every phase of their football game against the hapless Vikings Friday night and won going away 49-0.
The victory leaves Newberg, 5-2 for the season and 2-1 in league play, in second place behind Canby – who defeated Tualatin Friday to remain 3-0 in the 6A Pacific League standings.
The Tigers jumped on the Vikings, 1-6 on the year and 0-3 in league play, on the very first possession and never let up. The Tigers scored five touchdowns in the first half on four possessions.
“That was our goal,” said Eric Carlson, head coach. “We wanted to get a quick start and not allow them to hang around.”
And a quick start it was.
The Tigers won the coin toss but deferred due to the
rainy, windy weather at the start of the game.
The Vikings managed a two-yard gain on their first possession from their own 20-yard line but Vikings quarterback Eric Huson was swarmed by Tigers defenders on the next play and stopped in the backfield.
Suddenly, Tigers defensive lineman Dylan Hansen came bursting out of the scrum with the football and ran it about 18-yards for a touchdown with no one around him.
With less than 50 seconds off the clock, Newberg led the game 7-0 after Scott Goodman’s extra point kick.
“My teammates just stood him up,” Hansen said. “I saw the ball in his arms and just reached in and stripped it from him.”
The Viking’s next possession was aided by an offsides call on the Tigers, but with swarming defensive tackles by Aaron Boggs, Max Kengle, Kevin Winterfield and Jacob Graham, as well as excellent coverage provided by Jordan Howell, an eight-play drive ended on a turnover on downs.
The Vikings had no answer for Tiger running back Joey Chandler. Chandler was featured on the Tigers first possession and ran the ball six times for 38 yards. The drive also featured a 22-yard pass from Tiger’s quarterback Matt Dufour to Conor Hazenberg.
Chandler scored on a three-yard run and Goodman’s conversion made it 14-0.
Kengle manhandled the Viking’s quarterback on their next possession with a devastating sack for a four-yard loss, which forced a punt.
The Tigers drove 67-yards in six plays and Chandler got his second touchdown of the night on a 19-yard scamper to the right corner of the end zone. Goodman missed the conversion and the Tigers led 20-0.
The Vikings lost yards on their next possession after Boggs dropped Josh Pronozuk for a loss. Then Kengle and Cody Danielson combined to drop Huson for a two-yard loss on a sack and Forest Grove was forced to punt again.
The Tigers then manufactured a seven-play, 59-yard scoring drive that featured a 22-yard Chandler run and two passes from Dufour to Hazenberg for a total of 21-yards. Chandler scored his third touchdown on a two-yard run and Goodman’s kick made the score 27-0.
The Vikings could not move the ball and were almost intercepted by Cody Hunter-Brown on fourth down.
The Tigers moved 60-yards in less than two minutes on a six-play drive that included a Chandler run of 32 yards.
Dufour spread it around and found Hunter-Brown, Howell and Hazenberg. Hazenberg scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass. With Goodman’s extra point, the Tigers led 34-0 at the half.
Chandler managed 143-yards in the first half on 15 carries.
The Tigers had a holding penalty on the kick return, which moved the ball back to the 14-yard line. After a 32-yard Chandler run and a tough run by Kevin Winterfield for eight-yards, Dufour lost the ball on the snap and Vikings recovered on the 35-yard line.
After a short gain and a sack by Matthew Swanson for a loss of four, Hazenberg intercepted a Huson pass and ran it back 65-yards for a touchdown. With Goodman’s conversion, the Tigers led 41-0 with 6:54 remaining in the third quarter.
Two plays later Jared Heister, the new Viking’s quarterback, was intercepted by Winterfield.
The Tigers moved the ball to the 14-yard line but missed the field goal attempt after a miscommunication between the snapper and holder. The Vikings recovered on the 24.
The Vikings mounted a long drive, completed a pass on fourth down and goal on the one-yard line but turned the ball over on downs.
The Vikings had one more chance in the fourth quarter after they drove the ball to the six-yard line but, inexplicably, fumbled the ball three times and turned the ball over on downs again.
Carlson said he was proud of the effort and the two defensive touchdowns. He said the team met their goals this week and they would enjoy it briefly before bearing down on Tualatin next week.
The team travels to Tualatin Oct. 30 to attempt to break the three-way tie they share for second place in league standing along with Tigard.
