Ernst Kroo
   Former Newberg resident Ernst “Ernie” Kroo died Oct. 9, 2009, in Hillsboro.
   He was born Jan. 25, 1958, in Englewood, Calif., to John and Elisabeth (Thierjung) Kroo. He was raised in Southern California.
   In 1965, his family moved to Newberg, where he graduated from Newberg High School in 1976.
   In March 1979, he married Catherine Fullerton. They were divorced nine years later. In June 1995, he married Kathryn Lloyd in Hawaii.
   He worked in concrete construction for his father’s business and Newberg Ready Mix. He later started a dump trucking business, KB Trucking, which he sold upon retirement.
   He retired to Rockaway Beach, where he and his wife started Kroo’s Klams. He enjoyed fishing, clamming, crabbing, cooking, hunting, gold prospecting and spending time with family and friends.
   Survivors include: wife Kathy of Hillsboro; father John Sr. of Newberg; brother John Jr. of Newberg; daughters Sarah Beard and Karen Kroo, both of Banks, and Laura Blankenship of Germany; stepson John Lloyd of Garibaldi and eight grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by mother Elisabeth in August 2009.
   A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Peter Catholic Church of Newberg with Father Don Gutmann officiating.
   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Garibaldi Firefighters Association, PO Box 675, Garibaldi, OR 97118, or to the St. Peter Catholic Church building fund, 2315 N. Main St., Newberg, OR 97132.

Earl Payne
   Earl E. Payne of Newberg died Oct. 12, 2009. He was 88.
   He was born June 6, 1921 in Detroit Lakes, Minn., to Pearl and Emily (Emmerson) Payne. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
   He saw action in such places as Normandy Beach, northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Bronze Star, European Campaign with four bronze service starts with arrowhead, and the World War II Victory Medal. He later served in the National Guard.
   He resided in South Dakota, Newberg, Portland, Tacoma, Wash., and McMinnville, working as a truck driver and a machinist. He retired from Freightliner in 1988.
   He was a member of the Newberg Seventh-Day Adventist Church and the Elks lodge. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and horseshoes.
   Survivors include: wife Winona of Newberg; sons, Dennis of Portland and Thomas of Milwaukie; daughters, Terry Simpson-Lopez of Tualatin and Janet Taylor of Lakewood, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by daughter Dorothy.
   Military services were held Oct. 19 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
