Newberg vanquishes Tigard

6A cross country— Tigers boys take six of top 10 spots in the victory

   Joseph Pia placed first with a time of 16:30 in Wednesday’s cross country meet at Tigard.
   Pia finished 29 seconds ahead of Tigard’s Mark Medgin, who came in second in the 5K race with a time of 16:59. Newberg’s Tyler Magill finished third with a time of 17:17 and Taylor Johnston was fourth with a time of 17:23.
   Other top 10 finishers for Newberg were Danny Minor (sixth-place, 17:36) and Stephen York (ninth-place, 17:47).
   “(Pia) ran a good race from the front,” said Bruce Sinkbeil, NHS cross country coach. “(Magill) and (Johnston) came back and beat a runner who has run 16:40.”
   Top 20 finishers for Newberg: Christian Cosgrove, 11th, 17:58; Sam Lawson, 12th, 18:02; Philip Gravatt, 16th, 18:21; Clark Weber, 17th, 18:29; Kyle Fish, 18th, 18:44.
   The Newberg girls also edged Tigard for the win despite running without Emily Shelton, Mary Kate Koch and Shannon Edwards.
   Talli Koskela won the race with a time of 20:07.
   Kerstyn Miller placed fourth with a time of 22:14 and Anna Thackery was fifth at 22:16. Anna Joliff finished seventh and set a new personal record with a time of 22:33. Maggie Peterson came in 10th place with a time of 23:10.
   “(Koskela) beat a good runner to win,” Sinkbeil said. “(Miller) and (Thackery) also ran great races.”
Other to 20 finishers: Madeleine Kern, 13th, 23:42; Sara Creighton, 14th, 23:49; Rebekah Baker, 17th, 24:19.
