Battle of the 32s
Tiger running back Joey Chandler stiff arms Canby defensive back Erik Jernstrom for a big gain in Newberg’s loss to Canby Thursday night.
The Canby Cougars edged Newberg Thursday in a duel of 6A Pacific Coast rivals, 33-27.
Newberg won the toss and kept the ball for more than seven minutes in their first possession where they sustained a 16-play drive that spanned 77 yards.
The drive was highlighted by a nine-yard pass from Matt Dufour to Eli Votaw, a 12-yard catch for Conor Hazenberg and an eight-yard catch by Cody Hunter-Brown. Wyatt Mahoney also ran the ball for some tough-to-get yardage against the Cougars’ defense.
The drive stalled on Canby’s 23-yard line after an attempted pass by Dufour was batted down.
Kicker Scott Goodman, who was perfect on extra points in the contest, just missed the field goal attempt. C
anby’s first possession took the rest of the first quarter as they drove down the field mixing runs and passes, including a 27-yard pass reception.
Canby quarterback Josh Yoder scored on a nine-yard scramble less than two minutes into the second quarter.
Newberg’s second possession began with an excellent kickoff return to the 40-yard line by Kevin Winterfield. Newberg moved the ball to Canby’s 33-yard line but, after two incomplete passes, couldn’t convert on a fourth and one. Mahoney was dropped for a three-yard loss by Canby’s stiff defensive linemen.
Canby took over on downs.
With four minutes left in the half, Canby moved the ball effectively and advanced to Newberg’s 17-yard line on a great cutback run. The Tiger’s defensive line stiffened and and only allowed a few yards.
Canby completed a pass, then a penalty moved the ball to Newberg’s eight-yard line with only 40 seconds left until halftime.
Canby got a first down on the six-yard line and called timeout. Canby’s Rodi Samoilov scored on a one-yard run up the middle with one second left on the clock.
Newberg went to half trailing 14-0.
Coach Eric Carlson said he told his team at halftime that they were going to stop Canby on their first possession and then take the ball down the field and score, and that’s exactly what happened.
The Tigers’ defense held Canby to six plays and stopped them on their own 39-yard line. Defensive end Aaron Boggs had a monster hit on the running back for no gain that gave Canby a third and 10 situation. An incomplete pass stopped that drive.
The Tigers’ first possession in the third quarter was an efficient nine-play drive that included runs and passes.
Dufour hit Hazenberg on a 24-yard pass up the middle that was good for Newberg’s first score. Goodman made the extra point attempt and Newberg trailed 14-7.
Canby’s next possession began on their own 20-yard line after Gooding’s kick netted a touchback. Their scoring drive took exactly 13 seconds after Yoder connected to a receiver for an 80-yard catch and run. Canby missed the point after and led, 20-7.
Newberg took possession on their own 31 with four minutes left in the third quarter. After a couple of short gains, Winterfield broke a play up the middle for a 52-yard scramble. Joey Chandler scored on the next play from 10 yards out. With the extra point made, the Tigers trailed 20-14.
After Canby failed to convert, Newberg drove deep into Canby’s territory and seemed about to score, but Canby’s Nikita Martishev picked off a Dufour pass on the two-yard line and ran it back out to the 40.
The Tigers held Canby again and scored on a 55-yard run by Mahoney. Goodman’s kick gave Newberg its first lead of the night, 21-20, with 4:28 left in the game.
Canby came right back and scored on a 50-yard pass from Yoder to Cody Smith, giving them back the lead 26-21. Canby failed at a two-point conversion.
On Newberg’s next possession, Canby’s Erik Jernstrom picked off a Dufour pass and they scored on a 29-yard run by Samoilov and, after the kick, Canby led 33-21.
Newberg got the ball back with 1:11 left and scored on a 25-yard Dufour pass to Mahoney as time expired.
Canby, ranked sixth in state, sees their record climb to 4-1. Newberg drops to 3-2.
“We had them,” Carlson said after the game. “The difference is one or two plays.”
Carlson said his team’s explosive offense kept them in the game.
“They did a good job of shutting down our running game,” Carlson said. “And they couldn’t run on us.”
Carlson said both teams had to air it out to win and that there were numerous big passing plays on both sides.
“I’m proud of how hard out boys played and fought back to stay in this game,” Carlson said.
The Tigers host Tigard at 7 p.m. Oct. 16.
