A used car salesman was arrested Thursday by Newberg-Dundee Police officers following an investigation that led to the cancellation of the dealer’s license.
Jerry DeWayne Rosenstiel, 49, of 24049 N.E. Homeacres Road, was arrested for first-degree theft following an investigation into his business practices.
He was booked into Yamhill County jail and posted $10,000 bail for his release. The Yamhill County District Attorney’s Office subsequently declined to prosecute, due to insufficient evidence, but will pursue a follow-up investigation, Deputy District Attorney May Chao said.
Rosenstiel worked as sales manager for Aldo’s Auto Sales at 200 Highway 99W, a former furniture store.
“Right now, we have two allegations of instances where they took money up front — for repair services in one case and for a deposit on a vehicle purchase in the other — and never delivered,” said NDPD Sgt. Tim Weaver.
The NDPD investigation was carried out in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles, which took steps to rescind the dealer’s license from the owners of record, Mario Sanchez and Isidoro Jaimes, on Aug. 31.
“Mr. Sanchez turned in his certificate voluntarily,” said DMV investigator Larry Purdy. “After my conversation with him, he felt it was in his best interest to get out of the car sales business.”
Purdy declined to provide further details, due to pending administrative action by his department. Nevertheless, the charges levied by the NDPD may to be part of a larger pattern of misconduct.
“We’re told (Rosenstiel) has a record of similar conduct,” Weaver said, citing Portland television news accounts.
In addition to activities in the Portland area, from May to August 2007 Rosenstiel operated the Little Red Barn, a secondhand store at 415 W. First St. During that time he allegedly ordered goods and services on account, then left the Newberg area to avoid payment.
