Director of China program to speak at GFU luncheon
   George Fox University’s Thomas Peng, assistant professor of intercultural studies and director of the university’s China and East Asia Studies Program, will speak at a George Fox Auxiliary luncheon at noon Dec. 4, in the Cap and Gown Room in Klages Dining Hall on the George Fox campus. Genealogical society to meet
   McMINNVILLE — The Yamhill County Genealogical Society will meet at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 5 at the WOW Recycling Center meeting room, 2200 Orchard Ave. The program is “What Person Would You Most Want to Spend Christmas With and Why?” A potluck will follow. For more information, call 503-864-4027.

Lego robot tournament coming to Evergreen
   McMINNVILLE — The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum will host a 2009 qualifying tournament for the Intel Oregon FIRST LEGO League on Dec. 5 in the east end of the museum. Nineteen McMinnville-area teams are participating in the state-qualifying tournament. Each team, consisting of four to 10 students, one coach and one mentor, will be scored on their performance in various competitions throughout the day.
   The tournament competition is from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the awards ceremony at 4 p.m. General admission to the tournament is $5 and includes admission to the museum exhibits. Historical society sets meeting time
   McMINNVILLE — The Yamhill County Historical Society will meet at 2 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1500 Old Sheridan Road. Gary Brooks will present a program on McMinnville’s Santa Claus, Ron Eborall. For more information, call E. Rohse at 1-503-472-6827.

Weightlifting classes open
   The Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center is enrolling for two different weightlifting programs. Certified trainer Patty Crowley offers a women’s weightlifting class lasting one hour at 8 a.m. or 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Dec. 1-22. Cost is $46. Crowley also offers a weightlifting program for older adults called Strong Bones. This class runs from 9 to 10 a.m., Dec. 1-22. Cost is $46. Health care forum slated
   A public forum on health care will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 at George Fox University, Room 105 of Hoover Hall. The panelists include a medical research economist, a Providence Hospital administrator, a clinical psychologist, a physician and a public health nurse manager.

Newberg City Club to meet
   The Newberg City Club will meet at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday in the public meeting room of the Providence Newberg Medical Center, 1001 Providence Drive. Representatives from the Sheridan Federal Correctional Institution and the State Coffee Creek Correctional Facility will talk about what life is like in their respective correctional institutions. NAMI slates Thanksgiving dinner
   McMINNVILLE — The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will hold a holiday dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Abacus House, 625 N.E. Galloway St. This is a potluck dinner, but NAMI will provide the turkey and beverages. Guests should bring a table service and a potluck dish. “No school” public swim slated
   The Chehalem Aquatic Center will hold an open swim from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 4. Students can spend the afternoon in the water with mats, noodles and basketball; the diving board and the slides will also be available, as will the hot tub. Cost starts at $2.50.
