Newberg athletes in fall sports are honored

Post-season honors — Numerous Newberg High School athletes earn Pacific League recognition

A plethora of athletes from Newberg High School were recognized last week for their contributions to their respective teams.

Football
   Four players from the 2009 Newberg High School football team were unanimous choices by voters to be named to first team All Pacific League last week.
   Rory Oliver, who played on the offensive and defensive lines, was named to both the offensive and defensive team. Oliver had 21 tackles and assisted in 24 more this season. He also led the team with three sacks.
   Conor Hazenberg was chosen to the first team for his linebacker play. Hazenberg led the team in tackles with 46 and assisted in 38 more.
   Jordan Howell earned all-league honors after leading the team in interceptions this season with four. He also had 19 tackles and assisted in 12 others.
   Running back Joey Chandler was recognized after running the ball 173 times for 1,442 yards, an average of 8.3 yards per carry. He also scored 13 touchdowns.
   Scott Goodman was named all league first team twice for his punting skills and his place-kicking prowess. Goodman punted 20 times for 709 yards, the average punt being 35.5 yards.
   His longest punt of the season was 55 yards. He also averaged 55.6 yards on kickoffs with the longest being 65 yards into the end zone.
   Named to the all-league second team were Travis Wilfong, offensive line; Conor Hazenberg, tight end; Cody Hunter-Brown, wide receiver; and Wyatt Mahoney, kick returner.
   Players receiving all-league honorable mention honors were Max Kengle, defensive line; Cody Danielson, defensive line; Aaron Boggs, linebacker; Kevin Winterfield, linebacker; Dylan Hansen, offensive center; Cody Danielson, offensive line; Taylor Hart, offensive line; Jordan Howell, wide receiver; and Matt Dufour, quarterback.

Cross Country
   NHS cross country runners Joseph Pia and Emily Shelton were named to the all-Pacific League first cross country team.
   Pia placed fourth in the league’s district meet and Shelton finished sixth.
   Taylor Johnston, Tyler Magill, Danny Minor and Talli Koskela were named to the league’s second team and Cristian Cosgrove received a honorable mention nod.

Soccer
   NHS soccer player Andrew Halstead was named to the all-league first team.
   Daniel Spurgin was named to the second team and Scott Goodman, Spencer Snyder and Aki Hartley received honorable mention honors.
  The Tigers’ Dani Scott was named to the all-league first team from the girls team.
Allison Hamilton, Kylie Leffler, Mikayla Oviatt and Ayla Zahler were named to the second team while Ariel Snyder received honorable mention honors.

Volleyball
   Haley Clarke, a hitter on the Tigers’ volleyball team, was also named to the all-league first team.
Setter Haley Webb and defensive specialist Hallie MacDonald were each named to the second team, while Haley Webb and Madison Burger received honorable mention honors.
