McKinsey’s goal Sunday leads Bruins past Pioneers

D-III women’s soccer — Jenny McKinsey moves into second place on George Fox University’s all-time points list

PORTLAND — GFU’s Jenny McKinsey scored the only goal in a match with Lewis and Clark College Sunday to lift the Bruins to a 1-0 win.
The goal propelled McKinsey into second-place on the Bruins’ all-time points list and third on the career goals list.
The struggling Bruins broke a five game losing streak stretching back to their 3-0 win over Linfield College Oct. 11. They were also held scoreless during the streak.
McKinsey snapped the first of those strings with an unassisted goal at the 31:12 mark, scoring after a deflection in the penalty box. It was her seventh of the season, tying her with Kirsten Cardwell for the team lead, and the 30th of her career, breaking a tie for third on the Bruin career list with Brooke (Pitner) Erickson. Coupled with a Bruin-record 20 career assists, she now has 80 total points after passing Gegi Bonera’s 79 and is second only to Karli Holub’ 102 points.
From there, it was up to the Bruin defense to hold Lewis & Clark scoreless. The Bruins limited the Pioneers to 10 shots in all and none on goal, despite a 6-3 advantage for the Pioneers in corner kicks. The closest the home team came to tying the score was a breakaway by Katrina Weisbecker in the 76th minute, but the Bruins were able to punch the ball out of bounds before she could finish the run with a shot.
Bruin keeper Becka Doyle was credited with her third shutout of the season, although she had to make no saves to get it.  The Bruins took 11 total shots in the game, five on goal, with Pioneer keeper Elise Delgado making four saves.
On Saturday, the Bruins lost 4-0 to the fifth-ranked University of Puget Sound.
The Loggers first score came 12 minutes into the game on a cross from the right baseline by Christine Isabella.
The Loggers made it 2-0 at the 31:48 mark when Kelly Anderson put a ball into the middle of the penalty box from the left side of the box for Theresa Henle, who faked her defender twice before spinning and sending it into the right corner.
The Loggers scored again at 42:41 and might have had a larger margin but for two shots that hit the crossbar and rebounded. Bruin’s goal keeper Becka Doyle had six first-half saves.
Puget Sound closed out the scoring early in the second half.
Puget Sound out-shot George Fox 23-8 overall and 13-4 in shots on goal. McKinsey led the Bruins with three shots, including two on goal, but Logger keeper Kallie Wolfer stopped those along with two others in 70-plus minutes before Katie Wheeler completed the shutout. Doyle finished with nine saves for the Bruins.
Corner kicks were even at two apiece. Four fouls were called in the first half, three on George Fox and one on Puget Sound, but the game was officiated tighter in the second half, with 10 fouls whistled on each team.
George Fox (7-11, NWC 4-10) visits Linfield College at 11 a.m. Friday to begin the final weekend of the season.
