Oregon earns a ‘C’ for its charter schools

Education access — Oregon ranked 20th among states

A national advocacy group for public charter schools gave Oregon a “C” grade.
The Washington. D.C.-based Center for Education Reform ranked Oregon 20th in the country in terms of providing children with access to charter schools. A total of 11 states earned that grade.
Charter schools are publicly funded schools that operate independently of regular public schools.
The report was the center’s 11th annual. “Every state’s education law has certain legal components that play key roles in deciding whether that state does what its law’s title suggests — to provide all children with access to the highest-quality schooling opportunities possible,” Jeanne Allen, president of The Center for Education Reform, said in a press release. She added that “Oregon’s law is mediocre and should be significantly improved.”
Charter schools in Oregon must be sponsored by the district they’re located in. Their budget is funneled through that local school district. There are no charter schools in Newberg.
