City of Newberg officials verified Thursday that the Suntron plant will close in early 2010.
Suntron Corp. plans to shutter its Newberg plant, laying off all 190 employees.
Requests for comment to the Newberg campus and the company’s Arizona headquarters were not returned by press time Friday morning. But David Beam, Newberg’s economic development planner, confirmed closure of the electronics manufacturing plant was imminent.
“It’s official,” said Beam, adding that the city had been notified by Suntron’s local human resources manager. “The plan is to shut down by March 31.”
Located on Brutscher Road near the Newberg Fred Meyer store, Suntron performs a variety of production, testing and assembly services for electronics manufacturers, and has operated in Newberg for more than a decade.
The components produced in Newberg — and at similar facilities in Arizona, Texas, Massachusetts and New Hampshire — serve a wide range of applications, from telecommunications to medical equipment and industrial monitoring systems.
As one of Newberg’s top 20 largest employers, Beam said that finding a new employer to occupy the site would be “tougher than normal, because of where the economy is.”
“The building has changed hands a couple times before,” he said. “We’ll work through the state  recruitment office to help market the facility to a new firm.”
Statewide, Oregon’s tech sector has been hard hit by the recession, with a rise in unemployment of nearly 10 percent in the past year.

Clarification: The article states that unemployment in the tech sector has risen, or increased, 10 percent over the last year. It does not address what the rate currently is. - Amanda Newman, online editor

" Suntron closing has little to nothing to do with anything the government doing. they had been in a downfall long before this last election. the management was terrible. causing big name customers to flee
