Joann Bales
Joann Bales of Newberg died August 24, 2009. She was 74.

She was born Sept. 29, 1934 in Ainsworth, Neb. to Paul and Lila (Thompson) Morter and moved with her family to Newberg when she was seven years old.

She married Bill Bales on June 1, 1951 and they made their home in Newberg, where they were youth leaders at Newberg Friends Church for many years. Joann was also involved with the Christian Club at Newberg High School, God Squad for Newberg Junior High students, Women’s Bible Study Fellowship, and Lay Witness Missions. 

She and Bill enjoyed traveling, which included trips to Israel, Europe, Mexico, and Alaska.

Survivors include: daughters Julie Ponder and Paula Cathers, both of Dundee, and Karen Benham of Dayton; son David of Carrollton, Texas; brothers Harry Morter of Newberg and Rodney Morter of Kansas; sisters Eldoris Dyer of Portland and Ramona Hall of Christmas Valley; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 12, 2004.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. Her funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Newberg Friends Church, with pastor Richard Sartwell officiating.

John Hardcastle
John “Mac” Hardcastle of Newberg died Aug. 19, 2009. He was 98.

He was born May 7, 1911 in London, England and moved to the United States at the age of eight. He attended high school in Fresno, Calif. and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He became a nationalized citizen in 1934 and, in May 1949, he married Mary McKinnon in Reno, Nev.
Following the war, John worked at the Fresno Brewery and at Zenith, retiring in 1978. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, on Jan. 29, 1997.

He loved travel and  history, particularly that of his adopted hometown of Fresno, and he was a member of the Teamsters Union local 860 and Fresno Brewing Company local 893.

Survivors include his longtime friends, Steve and Cheda Manners of St. Paul.

Interment will take place at Willamette National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, on-line at www.stjude.org/donate.
