Hitchin' Post
sells trailers that pamper horses and their owners |
Yamhill County is,
according to Gary Olson, one of Oregon’s highest areas for horse
ownership — making his business a natural fit.
Olson owns The Hitchin’ Post at 901 Industrial Drive, selling new
and used horse trailers and offering repairs and accessories.
“I’m a horse owner myself — I’d owned several trailers and there
was nobody local for repairs or service,” Olson said. “Since we
opened, just over a year ago, word of mouth has been traveling
around.”
The Hitchin’ Post has a
staff of three, in addition to the aid of Olson’s girlfriend Melynda
Downing and their children, and “shop dog” Miley, an Australian
Shepherd named after one of the two makes of trailers Olson sells.
“Miley trailers are pretty popular — they’re your basic design,” he
said. “We also have Sooner trailers that are the real
top-of-the-line.”
With living facilities to rival any motor home in the front half
and room for three horses in the rear, the Sooner model on display
lives up to the claim.
“This model has a slide-out panel to widen the cabin to 11 feet,
plus a full kitchen and an entertainment center,” Olson added. “For
people who like to go trail riding or compete in shows, it’s a home
away from home.”
The store is actually Olson’s second foray into the business. For
the previous 20 years, he worked with his father building drag
racers.
“I started up after high school,” he said. “I’m pretty lucky in
being able to turn my hobby into a business — first with cars, now
with horses.” |
