Local wine lovers will soon get a side order of Pearl District sophistication without the drive to Portland with the scheduled Aug. 3 opening of the Crush Wine Lounge & Bistro.
Located in the former office of the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce, a Victorian home on Washington and Hancock streets, the bistro will offer a range of appetizers and wine by the glass, said owner Jessica More.
“There’s so many boutique winemakers in the area, we decided to open a bar that would showcase their product,” she said. “It’ll all be Oregon wines; most of it will have been made within about 15 miles of this spot.”
Consulting with Natalie’s Estate owner Boyd Teagarden, More is developing a list of Newberg- and Dundee-area labels that include vintages from Owen Roe, Arborbrook and Domaine Meriwether — with more to come.
“The list will change and evolve depending on what’s available,” More said. “We’d also like to feature wineries where we offer an expanded selection for a week or a month.”
But fine wine will not be the only thing on display at the bistro, as More, with the aid of designer Richard Whitehurst, are working to remodel the former office into a swanky night spot.
“It’ll be kind of posh — lots of overstuffed chairs, kind of a mismatched-but-on-purpose style,” she said. “We’ll have a red room, a purple room and a private dining area behind a big velvet curtain.”
“Newberg’s definitely ready for a place like this and I hope that a lot of the winemakers we work with will come here to talk about their craft,” she added.
More and her husband, Trent, began planning the bistro after deciding to renovate the house, which they purchased after the Chamber moved out and which formerly housed Trent More’s real estate business, United Land Investments.
“Our hope is that it will be the ‘before and after’ place, where people will stop by after work or before a movie, have a glass of wine and some dessert,” she said. “We’ll have beer too, but only from Oregon brewers, in keeping with the theme.”.
