Dundee: Satisfy
your sweet tooth here |
DUNDEE — If fresh-baked
pastry is your ideal way to start the morning, Krist and Linda
Johnson welcome your business.
On June 2, they opened the Old Portland Road Bakery at 1174 Highway
99W, across from Calamity Jane’s.
“Our whole
family’s in the restaurant business,” Linda Johnson said. “My son
Roger has been a baker for 20 years in the Midwest and we opened
this business to give him a start here when he moved to Oregon two
years ago.”
Originally from Wisconsin, the Johnsons have brought a few
Midwestern specialties with them, such as “kringles,” a type of
coffee cake, and the slightly more unusual “lefse.”
“It’s kind of like a tortilla, but it’s made with mashed potatoes,”
Johnson explains. “Most people eat them with butter and sugar, or
fresh berries.”
The bakery also offers the standard range of bagels, donuts,
muffins, Danishes and other pastries. Espresso is available to
complete one’s breakfast.
“We also bake cakes — we don’t keep a lot on hand, but we’ll take
orders,” Johnson added.
Their goods have proved popular with the congregation of Dundee’s
neighboring Methodist Church, as have their range of handmade breads
— available by the loaf or as part of a deli sandwich.
“We get a rush around noon each day,” Johnson said. “Business has
been pretty good.”
While the Johnsons hope to recruit some wholesale clients for their
wares, diners are welcome. The bakery is open 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Tuesdays through Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Mondays.
