Local Web design and maintenance company
Code Monkeys has found a new home at 316 E. First St., formerly the
home of the Royal House of Orange Tea Co.
“It’s quite an improvement,” said owner Chris Skaggs. “We felt it
was time for a more visible location with more floorspace and room
to grow.”
Launched
six years ago out of Skagg’s garage, Code Monkeys formerly occupied
a space next to The Coffee Cottage (now its conference room) and
most recently a basement office near Mike’s Medical Pharmacy on
Villa Road.
“The problem there was, even if you wanted to find us, it was hard
to do so,” Skaggs said. “We don’t get a lot of walk-in business
normally, but since opening here May 1, we’ve had several new
clients come in already. It’s kinda surprising.”
Now, with a staff of four programmers, Code Monkeys began as a
sideline to Skaggs’ temp work for various Portland firms, “back in
the days when everything about Web programming was in a couple
books,” he said.
“It used to be you could be both a designer and a programmer,
but these days we’ve found our niche doing Web support and hosting —
designers will create the look of the site and we maintain it,” he
said. “But if people don’t have a look in mind, we can create one.
We do everything from home pages to back-end databases and
e-commerce.”
The name “code monkeys” is a slang expression for programmers,
Skaggs explained.
“It’s a term you hear a lot in the industry. I figured, people call
us that anyway, so have fun with it,” he said. “Plus, people find it
easy to remember.”
