Massage therapist explores new healing techniques

D'Anne Olsen will teach Emotional Freedom Techniques during workshop, through book

After 15 years as a licensed massage therapist, D’Anne Olsen is broadening her horizons.
“I’ve always been interested in alternative healing techniques and when I heard about this it knocked me off my feet,” she said.
“This” is Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, an acupuncture-based method to combat unpleasant emotions, behaviors and phobias.
“It’s connected to the theory that the mind and body are connected,” Olsen said. “Its creators found they could relieve the physical symptoms of a phobia — you know that ‘butterflies in your stomach’ sensation? — and eventually the phobia itself. People think that your thoughts cause bodily sensations, but it’s actually these sensations that produce emotions.”
Unlike traditional acupuncture, EFT uses only finger pressure and participants are encouraged to perform it on themselves.
“It’s a tool. I’ll teach a client how to do it, so they can use it themselves,” Olsen said. “That really appeals to me, as a former teacher, I want to help people overcome their obstacles.”
Olsen said that EFT practitioners have successfully dealt with relationship issues, depression and addictions to food and cigarettes.
“It’s about reducing anxiety,” she explained. “Part of the approach is to separate yourself from the problem, to move away from this unwanted behavior and toward greater self-acceptance.”
To that end, Olsen recently self-published a book titled “Return to Joy: An Illustrated Manual for Grown-ups.”
“It’s about depression and strategies for wellness,” she said. “I wrote it with a whimsical, fairy-tale theme as part of that approach. In depression, there’s a part of you that doesn’t want to be happy and I’m hoping to help people see that.”
Olsen will offer introductory workshops on EFT from 6 to 9 p.m. July 9 and 12 through the Chehalem Park and Recreation District. Call 503-537-2909 to register or for more information.
More information on EFT is available online at www.emofree.com. To order a copy of “Return to Joy,” call 971-506-0498 or visit www.efthealing.tripod.com.
