New patient care
admin oversees hospital service |
With a nursing staff of
125, Providence Newberg Medical Center needed a motivated
administrator to oversee the department. They found one in Debbie
Glass.
Glass joined the hospital this month as the assistant administrator
for patient care, responsible for quality control and strategic
planning for the nursing staff.
“I always wanted to be a nurse — I went into the program right out
of high school,” Glass said. “What led me to a leadership position
was a desire to remove barriers for the staff, to make their work
easier and add new services.”
A graduate of Oregon Health Sciences University, Glass has worked
at Salem Hospital for the past eight years.
“I was ready to make a change from Salem,” she said, “and I was
looking for a place that valued nursing. I really got that sense
here.”
As an administrator, Glass takes on what she calls “a systems
approach” to the work of nursing.
“There’s a lot of benchmarks that we monitor, daily or even
hourly,” she said. “We’re looking at the continuum of care, from
admission to discharge. It could be anything from adjusting the
schedules to ongoing training or new protocols. Most of my
experience is in acute care, but I also have to be familiar with
community health issues, such as insurance rates.”
Despite its occasional stresses, Glass said that she was enjoying
her new position at Providence Newberg.
“It’s the size where I’m able to get to know people by name, and
really build a working relationship,” she said. |
