Rampant Lion will soon close its doors

Lower the Jolly Roger to half-mast: the Rampant Lion is going out of business.
Over the past four years, the shop had drawn a small but dedicated group of patrons with its range of unusual goods, including tartan ties, collectible knives, imported candies, and pirate-themed gifts, the product of owners Preston and Kelly Marshall’s interest in Celtic history and historical re-enactment.
“We started off about seven years ago, doing booth sales at (Society for Creative Anachronism) and Renaissance Faire events, and that led to the Highland Games,” Kelly Marshall said of the eclectic store’s beginnings. “We came here as a place to park ourselves between shows.”
Originally from Lincoln City, the couple soon relocated to Newberg: “It was a good place to live and raise our son,” she added.
Like many stores in downtown Newberg, the Rampant Lion has struggled to attract shoppers, but that was not the reason for its closure.
“We’re divorcing — it’s an amicable split, but we’re dissolving our partnership in the store as part of that,” Kelly Marshall said. “We’re going to keep doing outdoor events and we’ll have a booth at the Old Fashioned Festival this year as well.”
Much of the store’s merchandise — including its range of antique and collectible knives and swords — will continue to be offered at Preston’s Old Tyme Exchange in Lafayette.
Meanwhile, Kelly Marshall said she plans to open a new store, in partnership with her mother and friends, similar in spirit to the Rampant Lion.
“We never meant to make a lot of money — just enough to live on and have fun,” she said.
