   Coming off an unbeaten run at the preseason Prez Fest Feb. 23, Newberg had reason to be confident heading into the regular season.   The Tigers, who lost a large number of seniors and will compete in Division II this spring, followed through on that promise by downing Division I West Linn 27-14 Saturday at Renne Field.

   It took some grit, but George Fox swept its way into first place in the Northwest Conference by taking all four home games versus Lewis & Clark over the weekend at Morse Field.

   George Fox posted 17 new Northwest Conference qualifying marks, including new NWC-leading times by Rachel Kraske in the 400 meter hurdles and the women’s 4 x 400 meter relay team, and won nine events, but placed second at its own Rich Allen Classic on Saturday at Colcord Field.

Doug Muck to be inducted into national wrestling hall of fame

   Following a successful career on the mat and the sidelines, former Newberg High School Athletic Director Doug Muck will be inducted into the Oregon chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for lifetime service.

   Newberg is 1-1 after two games and head coach Steve Richards is quite encouraged about the 2013 season.    His confidence comes less from the Tigers’ 12-1 win over North Salem March 12 and more from what he learned during their 3-1 home loss to Jesuit March 14.

   Thanks to strong pitching and consistent hitting, George Fox swept its three-game home series versus Willamette over the weekend.    The Bruins also received some assistance from Pacific Lutheran, which took two of three games from previous league leader and defending Northwest Conference champion Whitworth, allowing GFU to move into a first-place tie with Linfield.

   SALEM — Newberg’s inexperience and promise were both on display March 19 in an 8-3 home loss to Corvallis.    The team’s youth was evident during a span of one minute, 56 seconds early in the second quarter, in which the Spartans scored four consecutive goals to stake a 5-1 lead.

Bruins crush Linfield at OGA match Sunday

   WOODBURN — Led by a five-over-par 78 by Loreece Magsanide, George Fox cruised to 97-stroke win over Northwest Conference rival Linfield in the GFU Spring Preview women’s golf tournament Sunday afternoon at the Oregon Golf Association Golf Course.
