   If you live in Newberg and own property, you pay at least $2.57 in Yamhill County taxes per $1,000 of assessed value on that property. That doesn’t include your bill owed to other taxing districts: overall a Newberg property owner pays between $11.

   According to the 2010 Census, Oregon spent more than $9,600 annually for every public school student in the state. That put Oregon at No. 32 in funding among the 50 states; the average for the nation was about $1 1,000 and the highest was Washington, D.

   In the late 1980s the Oregon Legislature passed legislation requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets.    Judging from the anguished cries of bikers across the state, you would have thought the world had come to an end.

   Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown has a bright idea for increasing voter participation in elections: automatic voter registration.    The system would rely on the records of several state agencies, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, to alert the secretary of state’s office when someone turns 18 and is eligible to vote.
