When discussions about education come up, here or in other communities like us, they usually concentrate on K-12. Higher education seems to be so far off for so many that its importance is somewhat of an afterthought.

Thursday’s opening of a Goodwill store in Newberg has, for the most part, been met with enthusiasm by town residents. Given Newberg’s dearth of places to shop for clothes and ordinary household items, who wouldn’t be happy to have another outlet nearby?
But then there are those people who can find the negative in even the most positive of situations.

— Thumbs up to the city of Dundee for their gleaming new wastewater treatment plant.
Even though the multi-million-dollar facility’s primary job is treating waste, it is exciting that Dundee has finally stepped into the 21st century and has a facility that can grow with the community.

Today’s front page features a story by Jill Smith on the plight of William the cat and his owner Phil White.In the story Smith referenced Washington County’s animal services department and its $2 million annual budget.

— Kudos to the Newberg Charitable Organization and its $3,000 donation to Habitat for Humanity’s ‘A Brush with Kindness’ program. The NCO has for many years run the thrift shop at Third and Howard streets, with the proceeds going to a variety of worthy causes, from ambulances and fire trucks to Newberg F.

The complexion of county and state politics, where it pertains to residents in the Newberg area, could drastically change given the differences between the candidates for a number of offices highlighted recently on the pages of the Newberg Graphic.

Typical for this time of year, Halloween will be accompanied this evening with blustery wind, rain and low temperatures.
So it’s our hope that parents will take advantage of the Newberg Downtown Coalition’s annual Halloween extravaganza, which among other attributes features well-lit streets, crossing guards and the opportunity for the little ones to gather mass amounts of candy without putting themselves in harm’s way.
