published: 2/3/2012 2:15:05 PM

To the editor:   From 2004 through 2010, my parents, Maxine and Gene Reitmann, faced many grave medical problems — my mother suffered a massive and highly debilitating stroke and soon after her death in 2009 my father began to suffer from rapidly progressing dementia before he died in 2010.

Feb. 11 Letters to the Editor
published: 2/10/2012 11:31:26 AM

To the editor:   We really appreciate the recent article by Amanda Newman on Riverbend Landfill. Being one of the 500 landowners in the immediate area of the landfill, we can verify that the smell, noise and visual pollution only continue to intensify as it continues to grow.

published: 2/14/2012 12:33:35 PM

To the editor:   After reading in The Newberg Graphic about the Newberg City Council’s tirade on Feb. 6, I listened to the audio recording of the city council hearing on the city’s website.

Feb. 18 Letters to the Editor
published: 2/17/2012 1:50:33 PM

To the editor:   It was with some joy and then a bit of shock that I read The Newberg Graphic article on the McClure property revoking any and all ideas of annexation and development.

Feb. 22 Letters to the Editor
published: 2/21/2012 2:55:48 PM

To the editor:   The recent criticism of the Newberg City Council for voting to annex our property is misplaced. We did not need to annex our property to construct our subdivision.

Feb. 25 Letters to the Editor
published: 2/24/2012 2:36:39 PM

To the editor:   Kudos to The Newberg Graphic for recent coverage of several controversial issues, including articles about the landfill on the South Yamhill River and the unfortunate Newberg City Council Meeting on Feb.

Feb. 29 Letters to the Editor
published: 2/28/2012 2:20:33 PM

To the editor:   While Graphic readers are understandably upset about recent comments by city council members about the McClures’ request to vacate their proposed Measure 37 subdivision, one of the major issues in McMinnville is the proposed expansion of Riverbend Landfill.

Guest Opinion

Feb. 29 guest opinion: Measure 49 causes unfair process that never ends
published: 2/28/2012 2:22:13 PM

After reading the Feb. 15 article in The Newberg Graphic about the McClures’ situation, I thought people might be interested to know that there are others who are still floundering with Measure 49 vesting requirements.

Feb. 25 guest opinion: What endorsements can tell us about political races
published: 2/24/2012 2:38:26 PM

The endorsement of a political candidate by another politician generally draws a well-deserved yawn from voters. But over the past half-century of savoring and covering American politics, I have learned that an endorsement can tell us something quite important about the individual endorsing as well as about the individual being endorsed.

Feb. 22 guest opinion: No one should be forced to act against his or her conscience
published: 2/21/2012 2:58:03 PM

A question arises from the recent controversy between President Obama and the Catholic Church that aches for an answer: If Catholic institutions have a right to abstain from paying for what morally offends them, why don’t the rest of us?   The initial Obamacare rule held that all employers, in fulfilling their new legal requirement to provide health insurance to their employees, must include contraception (and other preventive health services) in the coverage at no cost.

Feb. 15 guest opinion: City councilor’s comments completely out of line
published: 2/14/2012 12:35:22 PM

I was appalled by Councilor McKinney’s comments and grandstanding in front of the Boy Scouts at the Feb. 6 Newberg City Council meeting.   On the agenda that evening was the McClures’ request to withdraw their annexation into the city.

Feb. 18 guest opinion: Will Catholic bishops and religious right save Obama?
published: 2/17/2012 1:49:06 PM

What is most striking about the showdown over contraceptive freedom is not the political victory that President Obama earned by standing up for women’s reproductive rights, although his Republican adversaries are certainly helping him to make the most of it.

Feb. 11 guest opinion: Why Oregonians deserve the right to work
published: 2/10/2012 11:34:17 AM

The 22 states that have not required workers to join a union and pay union dues have enjoyed, as a group, more rapid employment and income growth, better job preservation, and faster recoveries from recession.

Feb. 8 guest opinion: Stopping the rush to war against Iran
published: 2/7/2012 2:57:40 PM

A growing group of individuals and organizations designated Feb. 4 as a “National Day of Action,” aimed at preventing a war against Iran. The manifesto was simple: “No war, no sanctions, no intervention, no assassinations.

Feb. 4 guest opinion: Did Reagan raise taxes? Let GOP candidates answer
published: 2/3/2012 2:16:57 PM

Politicians and their flacks lie every day, but it is unusual for someone prominent to utter a totally indefensible falsehood like the whopper that recently sprang from the mouth of Eric Cantor’s press secretary on national television.

Editorials

Come on, people! Get involved
published: 2/7/2012 2:54:33 PM

We can only infer from the poor turnout at  Sen. Ron Wyden’s town hall Saturday in Newberg that people are completely satisfied with all phases of government and the direction of both the state of Oregon and the nation in general.

Feb. 15 editorial: Home team needs your support
published: 2/14/2012 12:31:21 PM

In this space last week we admonished people to get involved in their community after a dismal turnout at a recent town hall held by Sen. Ron Wyden.

Hard to argue the stimulus isn’t working
published: 2/10/2012 11:32:19 AM

Travel down to the main station of the Newberg Fire Department and you’ll witness a whole lot of activity, but it isn’t the usual firefighters and EMTs busily preparing for the next emergency call.

Feb. 18 editorial: Council wrong on McClure plan
published: 2/18/2012 8:00:00 AM

On Feb. 6 all the members of the Newberg City Council, save for one, took the opportunity to rail against the state’s land use laws and a variety of groups after Charles and Ellen McClure announced they were ending their plan to construct a high-end housing subdivision, winery and senior care facility on their land near the intersection of Highway 99W and Benjamin Road.

published: 2/24/2012 2:35:16 PM

Newly-elected Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Leonard Pitts, although speaking on diverse topics at two entirely different Yamhill County venues, nonetheless touched on a common theme this week.

Feb. 29 editorial: There's no shame in apologizing
published: 2/28/2012 2:17:40 PM

A parent’s basic core function is training his or her children how to live independently in the world, whether it be looking both ways before stepping into the street, playing fair with other children or offering a heartfelt ‘I’m sorry” when they’ve wronged another.

Feb. 4 editorial: Mezzo Devotion finally earns its due
