3-3 Letters to the Editor

To the editor:   I was somewhat dismayed to read the Feb. 24 editorial headlined, “Is there a conflict of interest here?”, suggesting that Newberg City Councilor Denise Bacon might have a conflict of interest that could compromise the working relationship with the Yamhill County Commissioners.

To the editor:   What started out as a small effort to teach a lesson in giving to help Haiti and to further our math lessons in counting coins, turned into a big lesson in compassion and community.

I cannot resist responding to a column and an editorial published recently in the Newberg Graphic: “We’re a republic, not a democracy” by Don Wright and “Is market response a good omen?”   These two articles illustrate liberal thinking at their finest.

“Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” — Kris Kristofferson   The raging debate over Obamacare is not exactly all about health. It’s really about freedom, or lack thereof.

I have been reading the letters to the editor and columns in other newspapers about the damage “faith healing” has done to the children of parents who practice it.

It is disheartening to hear some people use the words “capitalism” and “socialism” with respect to health care reform.   These value-laden terms are being used without reflecting on the true nature of health insurance, which detracts from the real debate of funding health care.

Many of President Barack Obama’s domestic priorities seem intractably stuck in partisan gridlock, but one of his recent State of the Union proposals appears to be moving ahead quickly: taxpayer-backed loan guarantees for so-called “safe, clean, nuclear power plants.

The federal government is likely to extend unemployment benefits with approval from both conservatives and liberals. If all federal extensions pass, Oregonians will be eligible for up to 105 weeks (about two years) of unemployment insurance benefits, compared to the usual 26 weeks.

There’s an apology epidemic. If it’s not a corporate executive (Akiro Toyoda), then it’s an athlete (Tiger Woods, Mark McGuire) or a politician (Mark Sanford, John Edwards).

We couldn’t help but notice the empty seats at the NHS boys and GFU women’s basketball games Friday and Saturday night.   Come on Newberg, what gives?   Newberg was playing Saturday vs.

Assuming George Fox beats Louisiana College Friday night in the playoffs of the Division III national women’s basketball tournament (we’re confident they will), and given that Newberg High School easily dispatched South Salem Wednesday in the first round of the Class 6A boys basketball tournament, it’s time for Newberg residents to step up their support.

3-3 Editorial

On Monday, state Sen. Larry George and state Rep. Kim Thatcher vilified the majority Democrats in the Legislature for a number of things, but their rhetoric rang hollow because of what it lacked: context and history.

A person would be hard-pressed to argue that the health care system in the United States isn’t broken.   People fortunate enough to have health insurance often suffer under poor quality programs that do little in the way of preventive maintenance, cost individuals and corporations a fortune, and are so complicated as to only be understood by lawyers.

Our hats are off to the George Fox University women’s and Newberg High School boys’ basketball teams. It was a heck of a ride while it lasted.   Just in case you’ve been living in a hole for the past three months, both teams have made their respective schools proud by playing stellar basketball right here in little Newberg.

Thursday’s NHS loss to Jesuit in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A boys basketball tournament has us feeling bewildered. Newberg lost by 38 points. That in itself is amazing considering that the Tigers were ranked seventh in the state, won the Pacific Conference championship and had a tough preseason schedule against many good teams.

Members of the Newberg City Council have taken some heat of late for comments they made in mid-March that it was not likely the council would accede to a recent request of the school district and revisit its 2008 decision not to create a daytime curfew ordinance.
