Volunteer Corner is a place -- a clearinghouse of sorts -- where local organizations can list volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are greatly appreciated for the following groups: -- Yamhill County Suicide Prevention Coalition is a an active group of concerned citizens who seek to raise awareness regarding depression and suicide; train individuals how to recognize, respond and refer potentially suicidal individuals; provide support to those who have lost a loved one to suicide; and collaborate with other community groups/schools to achieve our goals of decreasing suicide. If you are available to serve for one or two hours, one day a week, call Dawn at Northwest Senior and Disability Services, 503-538-1490. -- Bible Foundation needs volunteers. Individuals, groups and homebound people to help make a difference in the lives of people around the world with scripture. Flexible scheduling with a variety of tasks. Those looking for a place where you can make a difference may contact Deanne Jackson, activities director, at 503-538-9436. The care home is located at 1500 E. First St. and specializes in delivery of skilled nursing, rehabilitation and long-term care services. -- The Family Friends Volunteer Program needs seniors (age 55-plus) to befriend children with special needs and chronic health problems. Volunteers will serve as companions and advocates to children and their families. If you have a heart for children, have two to four hours a week to interact with a child and his or her family and are willing to complete a 20-hour training session in September, contact Kathy Watson, Family Friends program coordinator, at 503-537-1546 for additional information. -- The nonprofit agency Newberg Charitable Organization is seeking volunteers to work part-time in its thrift shop, located at the corner of Third and South Howard streets. The organization benefits health-related needs in the community. For more information call 503-538-5051. -- Chehalem Youth and Family Services (CYFS) needs volunteers to assist in its annual fund-raising concert project. Be part of a team that creates a truly memorable event for a great cause. Also, volunteers are needed to mentor at-risk youth -- training and support provided. Volunteers are also needed to beautify family-style facilities for youth in out-of-home care. Funds are regularly needed for program operations, such as recreation, supplies, replacements and staff supervision. Volunteers will make a difference for women and children of all ages who have been victimized by domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Henderson House is also recruiting board members with an interest in fund-raising, public relations, marketing and helping the organization grow. Volunteers are needed for this Mid-Willamette Valley Senior Service program. Several areas have positions available: Firefighting, emergency medical services, administrative assistance, maintenance, fund raising, and public education. The local, 87-bed nursing facility seeks people who would like to develop lasting relationships with residents. Volunteers can offer their special talent or just their time to the center. Activities range from gardening and crafts to exercise and music to chatting or playing cards. Provide your support and wisdom to those who are getting started again. Volunteers can give an hour a month or a week. Class credit for students is often available. Trainings are held twice a year.
