| Registration for CPRD summer camps underway |

The summer is approaching and the Chehalem Park and Recreation District is now registering youth for its upcoming summer and fall sports camps. Pee Wee Sport Camps Children in these camps sample soccer, football, hockey, tennis and other sports and will be introduced to these and other games while learning about teamwork, respect for themselves and respect for others. All campers will receive a camp T-shirt. The camp is for children ages 5 to 9. The fee is $45 per in-district resident ($55 per out-of-district resident). The first sessions runs from 10 a.m. to noon June 16-19 at the Jaquith Park tennis courts. The second session of the camp runs from July 14 to 17. The camp is instructed by Dave Brown. Tiger Baseball Camp The camp will focus on all aspects of the game of baseball and special emphasis will be placed on throwing and hitting. All camp participants will receive a Newberg camp T-shirt. The camp is for players in grades 1 to 8. The fee is $50. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 16-19 at the Newberg High School varsity baseball field. The camp is instructed by Newberg High School varsity baseball coach Frank Baumholtz and his staff. Lady Tiger Hoop Camp Newberg High School varsity girls basketball coach Tamie Woginrich and staff will help players concentrate on shooting, ball handling, passing, defending and rebounding at this camp. Players will focus on fundamentals and full-court games. The camp is for players in grades 3 through 8. The fee for players up to the fifth-grade is $44 per in-district resident ($48 per out-of-district resident); the fee for players in grades 6 through 8 is $55 per in-district resident ($60 per out-of-district resident). The camp will run June 16-19. The camp for players in grades 3 through 5 will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Antonia Crater Elementary gymnasium. The camp for players in grades 6 through 8 will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Chehalem Valley Middle School. Tennis Lessons These lessons cover the same skills as the CPRD's tennis camp, but over a two-day period. Two ball machines and videotaping will be used to keep lessons moving and help student progress individually. The lessons are for beginning players age 7 to 17. The fee is $28 per in-district resident ($35 per out-of-district resident). The first session of the lessons runs from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. June 16 and June 18 at the Jaquith Park tennis courts; the second session runs July 21 and 23. Participants should bring one can of tennis balls to the lessons. The lessons are instructed by Newberg High School varsity boys tennis coach Dave Brown. Bruin Boys Basketball Camp George Fox University men's basketball coach Mark Sundquist will conduct a fun competitive week of basketball at the Bruin Boys Basketball Camp. Players will learn basic skills and will play full-court games. The camp is for players in grades 3 to 12. The fee is $47 per in-district resident ($52 per out-of-district residents) for players in grades 3-6. The fee for players in grades 7 through 12 is $52 per in-district resident ($57 per out-of-district resident). The camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 30 through July 3 at the Chehalem Valley Middle School gymnasium. Tennis Camp The CPRD's youth tennis camps are for all skill levels. Strokes, scoring, strategies, serving and game situations are covered in the one-week camp. The camp is for players ages 7 to 17 and the fee is $45 per in-district resident ($55 per out-of-district resident) July 7-10 at the Jaquith Park tennis courts. The session for beginning and intermediate players runs from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.; the session for intermediate and advanced players runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants should bring a snack and a can of tennis balls. Soccer Camp This camp emphasizes soccer skill development in ways that are fun and empowering. There will be lots of ball contact and small-sized games. Campers are asked to bring a soccer ball, water bottle and shin guards. The camp is for players in kindergarten through eighth-grade and the fee is $49 per in-district resident ($64 per out-of-district resident). The camp runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. for players in kindergarten and first grade; 9:30 a.m. to noon for players in grades 2 to 8. The camp will take place at Mountain View Middle School and is instructed by George Fox University men's soccer coach Tim Tsohantaridis. Lacrosse Summer Camp This camp is designed as an introduction to lacrosse and to see if there is a possibility of forming a lacrosse league in Newberg. The camp is for players in grades 6 through 12 for the upcoming school year. The fee is $49 per in-district resident ($64 per out-of-district resident). The camp will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 9-12 at Mountain View Middle School. The camp is instructed by Newberg lacrosse coach Brian Wood. Junior Tiger Football Camp This non-contact camp is for players looking to play youth football this fall. Campers will be instructed on techniques of blocking, passing, receiving and running with the football. There will also be a surprise celebrity speaker. The camp is for players in grades 3 through 6 and the fee is $50 per in-district resident ($58 per out-of-district resident). The camp runs from 9 to 11 a.m. July 28-31 at the Jaquith Sports Complex in Newberg. Larry Adams and his staff will instruct the camp. |
