Friendsview Retirement Community employee Susan Lundy recently received the 2008 Unsung Hero award by a coalition of nonprofit senior centers. This was the first year the award was issued.
Lundy has been employed at Friendsview for nearly 20 years. She started as a part-time employee and is now assistant to the director of food services.
Friendsview human resource director Peggy Hanson said that candidates for the award were nominated by their colleagues. She added that Friendsview forwarded a dozen nominations to the Oregon Alliance of Senior and Health Services and that the alliance counts 93 facilities statewide.
Lundy said she was very surprised to receive the award, adding that the news came when she reported for a managerial meeting one day. To her surprise people were laughing and cheering as she came in. "I don't know who nominated me, but they must have said some wonderful things," she said.
The award mentioned Lundy's performance leading the food service staff during a remodeling of the facility. The cooks were forced to migrate to the kitchens of Antonia Crater Elementary School and Chehalem Valley Middle School. "It was just a real adventure," Lundy said, "a real example of `meals on wheels.'"
That Lundy refers to the logistic challenge of cooking meals in a facility miles away as an adventure instead of a nightmare is testimony to her cheerfulness and positive attitude, Hanson said.
