Evangelist Tony Campolo will speak later this month at the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends.
Yearly Meeting Superintendent Colin Saxton said that he asked Campolo because "Tony's written quite a bit about the Kingdom of God." Saxton said that Campolo "was very instrumental in some of my own thinking about what it means to know and follow Christ."
Saxton added that Campolo also influenced his thinking about the role of the church in the world. "I've always found him to be engaging and stimulating. Saxton is expecting 700 to 1,000 people to attend the evening sessions of the meeting.
Campolo will speak on the conference theme of "Bring Forth the Kingdom" at 7 p.m. July 21-23 in Bauman Auditorium on the George Fox University campus. He also will discuss his most recent work and sign books at 1 p.m. July 22 Chapters Books and Coffee, 701 E. First St.
Campolo founded the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, which works to assist at-risk youth in the United States and in Third World countries to obtain an education. He was one of the spiritual advisers to Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal and has written 35 books, the most recent of which are "Letters to a Young Evangelical," "The God of Intimacy and Action" and "Red Letter Christians: A Citizen's Guide to Faith and Politics."
The Friends annual sessions are a time of fellowship, worship and business for members of the Friends Church, according to a press release. This year's meeting includes 27 workshops for adults, youth leadership sessions, and children's programs.
